ASHE
Hosts a Panel Discussion and an Exhibit on CHP at its 2004 International Conference and
Exhibition on Health Facility Planning, Design and Construction
March 15-17, 2004
Tampa , FL
The
American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE)
hosted a panel discussion on March 15 from 3:15pm
till 4:30pm: Cooling, Heating and Power (CHP): Decentralizing for Reliability
and Income.
The
panel discussed how hospitals could produce power and
use energy to become "utility independent," protect energy reliability
needed for patient services, and prevent
a loss of income during natural disasters
and grid failures. A detailed session agenda
is available here in PDF format.
Dale
Woodin (ASHE), Ed Mardiat (Burns & McDonnell), Dan Chisholm
(Motor and Generator Institute), Damon deChamplain
( Norwalk Hospital, Norwalk, CT) and Bob Chester
( South Oaks Hospital, Amityville, NY) made
presentations and answered questions of the
session attendees. Jan Berry (ORNL) gave
the opening remarks and moderated the panel
discussion.
PDF copies
of some of their presentations
are provided here:
ASHE
also hosted the DOE/ORNL
Desiccant Humidity Control Van (DHCV) that exhibited the energy
efficiency and indoor air quality benefits
of using desiccant systems in healthcare
facilities. It
also allowed visitors to experience the benefits of independent control
of humidity by using desiccants, and exhibited the benefits
of integrating desiccant dehumidifiers with
conventional cooling and CHP systems. Over
200 visitors toured the DHCV. Doug Kosar
( Energy Resource Center of the University
of Illinois at Chicago), Dharam Punwani (Avalon
Consulting, Inc.), Cheryl Hughes (Munters
Corporation), and Nick Honko (Kathabar Inc.)
facilitated the tours of the DHCV. PDF
copies of presentations on CHP
Systems Today and CHP
Systems Tomorrow are available here.
The exhibition of the DHCV at this event
was co-sponsored by the U.S. Department
of Energy, through the Oak Ridge National Laboratory,
and the Gas Technology Institute.
The Pacific Southwest CHP Initiative Organizes a Regional CHP Roadmap Session
January 26, 2004
La Jolla , CA
The
Pacific Southwest Combined Heat and Power Initiative
(PSWCHPI) organizes a Regional CHP Roadmap session
on Monday, January 26, 2004 , at the 5th Annual CADER/Clean
DG Coalition conference in La Jolla , CA . CHP advocates
and stakeholders will convene to identify barriers
to combined heat and power project implementation in
the Pacific Southwest, and will formulate a set of
specific, near-term action items to overcome them so
as to aggressively move forward on project implementation.
The US Department of Energy's Seattle Regional Office
and the PSWCHPI will sponsor the meeting. Energetics,
Incorporated, will facilitate the meeting and provide
a written account of the proceedings. For more information,
contact Chuck Collins (Chuck.Collins@EE.DOE.GOV ;
206-553-2159) at the Seattle Regional Office of the
Distributed Energy and Electric Reliability, U.S. Department
of Energy.

transfer studies to broaden the market penetration
of DG/CHP systems
- Product
development of new DG power systems and/or related
components
- Feasibility
studies to assess the viability of new DG product
designs/concepts
- Request
for proposals to Provide technical assistance to
NYSERDA as a data integrator.
Proposals
are due by 3PM (Eastern Time) on April 20, 2004.

about the Program's mission, goals, objectives, and
leadership!
Project
partners from industry, government, trade associations,
academia, and research institutions will report on their
research and development strategies and achievements
regarding distributed energy technologies and federal
and state activities.
Presentations
will cover the following areas:
- Industrial

Now Available - The CHP Resource Guide
October
13, 2003
Chicago, IL
The
Combined Heat & Power (CHP) Resource Guide was developed
and is published by the Midwest CHP Application Center
(MAC). The primary objective of the Guide is to provide
a ready reference for the basic principles CHP and the
"Rules-of-Thumb" that apply when considering a CHP application.
It is intended to complement the knowledge of those
who have some idea of what CHP is by providing "packets"
of information to serve as a refresher or provide reference
to specific information to assist in performing a first-level
screening or assessment of the suitability of CHP to
a particular facility. This Guide should be useful to
energy engineers, energy auditors, facility operations
directors/managers, or others (such as architects, owners
or managers of commercial buildings or industrial plants,
school district managers, city/town managers) who have
some understanding of physical systems in buildings
and who have possibly gone through some introductory
training or workshop on CHP applications.
The
information in the Guide represents the best efforts
by the MAC at of the time of publication. This Guide
should be utilized ONLY as a reference document for
screening and estimating purposes. It is NOT intended
as a tool for developing detailed CHP designs or cost
estimates. An electronic version of the
Guide is now available here in PDF format.
