ASHRAE Holds Symposium on CHP for Buildings

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) held a symposium on "CHP for Buildings," at its meeting (January 13-16, 2002) in Atlantic City, NJ. The titles, authors, and brief information on papers presented at the symposium are as follows:

  • Potential CHP Technology in Commercial Buildings - Characterizing the CHP Demonstration Building (Authors: A. Marantan, P. Poppvic, and R. Radermacher of University of Maryland) discussed a baseline characterization of an all-electric commercial office building to assess the impact of CHP systems on energy efficiency, emissions, and indoor air quality.
    (ASHRAE paper no. AC-02-18-1)
  • CHP Demonstration Projects at Federal Facilities (Authors: S. Fischer and P. Hughes of ORNL, and S.W. Carlson and H. Henderson of CDH Energy Corp.) Discussed the benefits of using three 3.5 MW gas turbines with heat recovery steam generators and a supplemental boiler for peak loading and compared it with the existing gas-fired steam boiler plant at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.
    (ASHRAE paper no. AC-02-18-4)
  • Evaluation of CHP Systems (Authors: A.A. Jalalzadeh-Azar, S.J. Slayzak, and J. P. Ryan of National Renewable Energy Laboratory) discussed evaluation of two CHP scenarios, incorporating microturbines, for a generic office building at three geographical locations using dimensionless analysis.
    (ASHRAE paper no. AC-02-18-3)
  • Status of Fuel Cell Systems (Authors: M.W. Ellis of Virginia Tech and B. Gunnes of Capital One Financial Corporation) discussed the development status, benefits, and potential economics of CHP systems incorporating fuel cells for buildings.
    (ASHRAE paper no. AC-02-18-2)

All of the above papers can be purchased online from ASHRAE.
